Hawaii Five-0 war sehr gur für CBS. Zwölf Jahre lang (1968-1980) spielte Jack Lord Steve McGarrett, den Kopf eines Elite Teams des Staates.
Also ist es passend, dass der Kanal sich bei der Wiederaufnahme an einen Schauspieler wenden würde zu dem sie sehr gut waren - Alex O'Loughlin. Der australische Schauspieler hat vor Kurzem für CBS in der kurzlebigen Serie Moonlight mitgespielt, wo er einen Blutsauger gespielt hat und letztes Jahr in Three Rivers, wo er einen transplatationschirurgen gespielt hat.
Alle guten Dinge sind drei, wie der Reboot von H50 bewiesen hat, der diesen Herbst ein richtiger Druchstarter war (und die Seire wurde bereits für eine ganze Staffel beordert).
*Beschreibung der Serie*
Obwohl die neue Serie im Nachhinein wie ein sicherer Gewinn erscheint, war da einiges an Sorge, das H50 vielleicht keine Zuschauer finden würde.
McLoughlin *also wirklich!!* war einer von ihnen, da CBS nach Moonlight und Three Rivers wieder keine Zuschauer findet und er fürchtete, dass H50 als Zeichen dafür gesehen würde, dass er keine Serie weiterbringen würde. Wie es sich rausstellt, hätte er sich echt keine Sorgen machen müssen.
In einem Exklusivinterview mit ASSIGNMENT X spricht er über die neue Serie und seine Vorhaben.
AOL: Okay, drei und das wars. Was werde ich machen? Wenn das nicht funktioniert denke ich, dass ich weggehen werde und in Filmen arbeiten oder zurück ins Theateroder sowas (lacht). Als erstes muss ich sagen, dass meine Dankbarkeit gegenüber Nina und Les und CBS, sie ist - ich kann es nicht beschreiben. Sie ist immens. Ich habe mich noch nie mehr geliebt in einer Arbeitsumgebung gefühlt, oder in einer Situation. Nachdem das gesagt ist, es ist für mich persönlich und professionell sehr wichtig, dass diese Serie funktioniert, weil meine Nervosität, bevor ich zu dieser Serie Ja gesagt habe, als sie mir angeboten wurde, war ob ich das Gesicht einer anderen Serie sein würde, die nicht so recht klappt? Und alle diese Serien waren gut- das ist eine trickreiche Sache. Was weiß ich? Ich glaube H50 ist gut.
AX: Du wurdest zitiert, dass du zweifeln würdest, ob diese Serie funktioniert...
AOL: Das war eine Art von Witz, aber was ich damit meinte ist, dass es da eine Wissenschaft gibt, dass ich niemals für einen Sender im Businesssektor arbeiten könnte, weil ich keine Ahnung habe, was Erfolg bringt. Ich schaue mir Sachen im Fernsehen an und für mich ist es schrecklich, aber unglaublich viele Leute schauen es. Und ich schaue mir Sachen im Fernsehen an und ich finde sie fantastisch und keiner schaut sie und so weiter. Also weiß ich nicht, was das Rezept ist. Da scheint es keinen Reim oder Grund dafür zu geben. Ich weiß nicht, ob das saisonal oder was auch imme rist, abe rich denke, dass H50 so viel für so viele verschiedene Menschen zu bieten hat -Männer, Frauen, alt, jung, Fans der alten Serie, Neueinsteiger - es ist einfach eine coole Serie und ich liebe die Beziehung zwischen McGarrett und Danno, ich liebe was sie beide mit den Charakteren machen.
AX: Du und Scott Caan habt eine tolle Bildschrim-Chemie zusammen...
AOL: Wir verstehen uns gut. Wir haben uns ein paar Mal getroffen, hatten ein paar gemeinsame Freunde, aber wir haben uns erst bei dem richtig kennengelernt. Wir sind nach Hawaii gezogen und Kumpel geworden.
AX: Wie hast du dich an das Leben auf Hawaii gewöhnt?
AOL: Sehr gut. Es war sehr schwer, als ich den Pilot gedreht habe - Ich war in einem Hotel wie eingesperrt, ich habe echt hart gearbeitet und war etwas nervös, weil ich alle meine Freunde verlassen musste. Ich bin schon wirklich weit von Zuhause, wenn ich in den USA bin, weg von Australien, aber jetzt habe ich auf Hawaii ein Haus. Es ist echt was besonderes, es ist wirklich wunderschön. Oahu ist nicht so weit weg, also braucht es nicht lange die Insel zu durchqueren, aber es ist ein sehr sehr besonderer Ort auf der Welt und ich gewühne mich echt gut ein (lacht).
AX: Vermisst du irgendetwas an Los Angeles?
AOL: Ich vermisse Leute. Es ist schwer irgendetwas von LA zu vermissen, wenn du in einem Ort wie Hawaii bist, abe rich vermisse die kleinen Sachen - hauptsächlich vermisse ich Leute, aber auch meine kleinen Gewohnheiten.
AX: Hast du das originale H50 angeschaut?
AOL: Nicht viel. Ein kleines bisschen. Ich habe das als Kind gesehen und ich habe einen kurzen blick darauf geworfen, bevor ich angefangen habe, und ich dachte " Weißt du, das musst du eigentlich nicht tun, es ist eine andere Richtung, es ist eine andere Zeit."Ich muss nur meine Arbeit mahcen.
AX: Fühlt es sich so an, als müsste die Serie irgendetwas tun, um sich vom Original zu unterscheiden?
AOL: Ich denke nicht, dass wir uns fühlen, als ob wir irgendetwas anders machen müssten als das was wir tun - wir werden anders als das Original sein. Es ist viele Jahre später. Ich meine, man kann nicht auf irgendeine TV-Serie so lange Zeit später schauen und sie mit dem heutigen Fernsehen vergleichen. Es gibt jetzt schon so viele Unterschiede, aber ich verstehe deine Frage. Ich verstehe, dass es eine komplexere Frage ist als das - Ich denke einfach nur es ist eine gute Möglichkeit. Wir haben genug in der Serie, wo wir eine Homage an die alte Serie haben. Wir gehen an mit der Ehre und dem Respekt und der Integrität, so dass wir in eine andere Richtung gehen können, so dass wir diese Charaktere in eine andere Richtung lenken können, damit es besser zu modernem Recht passt.
AX: Wie würdest du deinen Charakter Steve McGarrett beschreiben?
AOL: Er hat einen sehr trockenen Humor. Er ist ein Kerl, der mit vielen Kerlen aufgewachsen ist - er hat eine lange Zeit im Militär verbracht, in engen Quartieren. Er ist der Typ Kerl, der es gelernt hat sich und seine Ehre und die Ehre seiner Familie und seiner Freunde mit seinen Fäusten sehr schnell zu verteidigen und das sehr jung in seinem Leben. Er lässt sich nicht verarschen. Er versteht Ironie und Sarkasmus, wenn es eine Menge Leute um ihn herum nicht tun und er beendet den Job, egal was er dafür tun muss. Und er ist ziemlich intolerant gegenüber Leuten, die die Dinge anders sehen. Aber da ist auch etwas richtig liebenswertes an ihm. Er ist eine Art klassischer Löwe. Ich weiß nicht, was sein Sternzeichen ist, aber wenn du dich mit ihm verstehst,dann würde er sterben um dich zu beschützen.
AX: In Moonlight hatte dein Charakter Superkräfte, in Three Rivers hatte dein Charakter eine unglaubliche Menge an physischem Wissen und dieses Mal, während McGarrett nicht wirklich Superkräfte hat-
AOL: Ich habe ein Waffe.
AX: Du hast eine Waffe und bist physisch in Topform. Du trittst und springst und tötest dich bei diesen Sachen nicht. Bist du schon so durchtrainiert gewesen, oder bist du nur als jemand gecastet worden, dessen Charakter sehr durchtrainiert ist und musstest dann wie verrückt trainieren?
AOL: Nein, nein, ich war schon immer athletisch und ich habe es immer genossen draußen Sport zu machne, also ist es git, es macht mir Spaß. Ich mache das sowieso am Wochenende. Ich habe keine Zeit zu trainieren während ich eine Serie drehe, also ist es nett, dass es ein Teil meines Charakters ist - ich kann trainieren während ich arbeite.
AX: Im Vergleich zu deinem Gefühl wie H50 werden wird, was war dein Gefühl , wie Three Rivers werden würde, bevor es angefangen hat?
AOL: Ich habe Three Rivers so sehr geliebt und wirklich wirklich hart daran gearbeitet. Ich habe viel nachgeforscht. Das tolle an Three Rivers ist auch, dass ich die Möglichkeit hatte, die Verbindung die ich mit Donate Life America habe zu vertiefen, die eine meiner Hauptcharites im Moment ist. Ich bin Botschafter und Sprecher für sie und ich mag sie echt sehr gern und das ist die tollste Sache, die für mich bei der Serie rausgekommen ist, es ist die Möglichkeit irgendwie woanders zu helfen. Ich dachte, es würde länger dauern, wegen seiner Natur - wie erzählst du eine Geschichte jede Woche hundert Mal? Wie machst du die Organspende in einem Krankenhaus was bisher noch nicht gemacht wurde? Also ist das etwas anders. Die Güter der Serie sind McGarrett und Danno. Wir können das immer schauen.
Wenn man zwei Charaktere liebt und zwischen ihnen passiert, das kann sich in etwas für immer entwickeln, also daher kommt meine Überzeugung.
AX: Sonst noch was, was wir bis jetzt über H50 wissen sollten?
AOL: Ich liebe das Schreiben hinter der Serie, ich liebe das Talent und auch die kreativen Köpfe hinter der Seire. Ich denke es ist ein toller Talentpool und interessanter Menschen die zusammengekommen sind und einfach dieses Gefühl haben, schaltet ein und schaut es euch an. Es hat ein tolles Krimielement und es hat ein tolles Komikelement, von dem wir nicht realisiert haben, dass es derart vorhanden ist wie es ist und das kommt von dem tollen Charaktereelement und deshalb denke ich einfach, dass das eine Serie wird, die jedem gefällt.

HAWAII FIVE-0 has been very good to CBS. For twelve years (1968-1980), actor Jack Lord played Steve McGarrett, the head of an elite team of the state’s special investigations.
So it’s fitting that in resurrecting the franchise (an unsuccessful revival was attempted in 1997), the network would turn to an actor they’ve been very good to – Alex O’Loughlin. The Australian actor had previously starred for CBS in the short-lived 2007 series MOONLIGHT where he played a blood-sucker and in last year’s medical drama THREE RIVERS where he played a transplant surgeon.
The third time’s a charm though, as the rebooted HAWAII FIVE-0 has proven to be a breakout hit this fall (and the show has already been picked up for a full season).
Set and filmed in the title state, the action/adventure series deals with an elite police team of local McGarrett (O’Loughlin), and recent transplant Daniel “Danno” Williams, portrayed by Scott Caan. The duo are backed up by wrongly disgraced police detective Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) and his police academy graduate cousin Kono (Grace Park).
Although the new hit show seemed like a sure bet in retrospect, there was some apprehension before HAWAII FIVE-0 debuted that it might not find its audience.
McLoughlin was among those most concerned after MOONLIGHT and THREE RIVERS for CBS failed to find an audience, and he feared that HAWAII FIVE-0 was being looked at as a referendum on his ability to carry a show. As it turns out, he clearly need not to have worried.
In an exclusive interview with ASSIGNMENT X, he opens up about the new show and his initial concerns.
ALEX O’LOUGHLIN: Well, three and out. What am I going to do? If this one doesn’t work, I think I’m going to go away and work in films or go back to community theatre or something [laughs]. First of all, I need to preface this by saying my gratitude for [CBS executives] Nina [Tassler] and Les [Moonves] and CBS is – I can’t explain it. It’s enormous. I’ve never felt more loved by anybody in a working environment or in a situation before. That being said, it’s really important to me personally and professionally that this show works, because my nervousness before I said “Yes” to this show, when it was offered to me, was I would be the face of another show that didn’t quite go? And all the shows have been good – it’s a tricky thing. What do I know? I think [HAWAII FIVE-0] is good.
ASSIGNMENT X: You been quoted as saying you’d be bewildered if this show doesn’t go …
O’LOUGHLIN: I was kind of joking, but what I meant by that is that there is a science, but I could never work for a network in the business sector, because I have no idea what makes a success. I look at some stuff on TV and to me, it’s terrible, but lots and lots of people watch it. And I look at some stuff on TV and to me it’s fantastic, and no one watches it and vice-versa. So I don’t know what the recipe is. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason. I don’t know whether it’s seasonal or what it is, but I think HAWAII FIVE-0 has so much to offer so many different people – men, women, old, young, fans of the old show, newcomers – it’s just a cool show and I love the relationship between McGarrett and Danno, I love what we’re both doing with the characters.
AX: You and Scott Caan have a great onscreen chemistry together …
O’LOUGHLIN: We hit it off. We met a couple of times, we had a couple of mutual friends, but we really got to know each other on this. We’ve moved [to Hawaii] and we’ve become mates.
AX: How have you adapted to living in Hawaii?
O’LOUGHLIN: Really well. It was very difficult for me when I did the pilot – I was sort of cooped up in a hotel, I was working really hard and I was nervous about leaving all my friends. I’m already a long way away from home, being in the States, being away from Australia, but I’ve got a house in Hawaii now. It’s really special, it’s really beautiful. Oahu’s not that huge anyway, so even to cross the island doesn’t take that long, but it’s a very, very special part of the world and I’m adapting nicely [laughs].
AX: Do you miss anything about Los Angeles?
O’LOUGHLIN: I miss people, you know? It’s hard to miss anything about L.A. when you’re in a place like Hawaii, but I miss the little things – mainly I miss people, but [also] my little patterns, my little routines.
AX: Did you watch the original HAWAII FIVE-0?
O’LOUGHLIN: Not much. A little bit. I saw it as a kid growing up and I took a quick look at it before I started, and I thought, “You know, there’s no need to do that, this is a different direction, this is a different time.” I’ve just got to do my work.
AX: Does it feel like the new show has to do anything to differentiate itself from the original?
O’LOUGHLIN: I don’t think we feel like we need to do anything other than what we’re doing – we will stand out from the original. It’s [many] years later. I mean, you can’t look at any television that long ago [and compare it] with television now. There’s so many differences already, but I understand your question. I understand that it’s a more complex question than that – I just think it’s a good opportunity. We have enough in the show where we pay homage to the old show. We come at it with the grace and respect and integrity that we do, so that we can go off in a different direction, so that we can layer these characters in a different way that’s more conducive to modern law enforcement.
AX: How would you describe your character Steve McGarrett?
O’LOUGHLIN: [His sense of humor is] pretty dry. He’s a guy who’s grown up with a lot of guys – he’s spent a lot of time in the military, in close quarters. He’s the kind of guy that learned how to defend himself and his honor and the honor of his family and his friends with his fists very quickly and very young in life. He doesn’t take any shit. He understands irony and sarcasm when a lot of people around him might not and he gets the job done, regardless of what he has to do. And he’s pretty intolerant of people around him who see things differently, too. But there’s also something really lovable about him. He’s kind of a classic Leo. I don’t know what his star sign is, but if you’re in with him, he’ll die to protect you.
AX: In MOONLIGHT, your character had vampire superpowers, in THREE RIVERS, your character had a tremendous amount of physical expertise and on this one, while McGarrett doesn’t quite have superpowers –
O’LOUGHLIN: I have a gun.
AX: You have a gun and you’re very physically adept. You kick and jump and don’t kill yourself in doing these things. Do you relate to being that physical or do you just get cast as somebody who’s very physical and then train like crazy?

O’LOUGHLIN: No, no, I’ve always been athletic and I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors and being physical, so it’s good, I enjoy doing that. I do it on the weekends anyway. I don’t have any time to work out while I’m shooting a TV show, so it’s nice if it’s part of my character – I can work out while I’m working.
AX: To contrast it with your sense of how HAWAII FIVE-0 will do, what was your sense of how THREE RIVERS would do before it aired?
O’LOUGHLIN: I loved THREE RIVERS so much and I worked really, really hard on that. I did a lot of research. Also, the great thing about THREE RIVERS is that I got the opportunity to forge the relationship that I have with Donate Life America [an organization that deals with organ transplants], which is one of my main charities now. I’m an ambassador and spokesperson for them, and I love them very much, and that’s the greatest thing that came of that show for me, is the opportunity to kind of be of service somewhere. I felt it was a longer shot, because of the nature of it – how do you tell a story every week a hundred times? How do you do it about organ transplant at a hospital that hasn’t been done already? So this is a bit different. The guts of the show is McGarrett and Danno. We can always watch that. If you love two characters and what happens between them, that can develop into anything forever, so that’s where my confidence comes from.
AX: Anything else we should know about HAWAII FIVE-O at present?
O’LOUGHLIN: I love the writing behind this show, I love the talent and also the creatives behind this show. I think it’s a great pool of talent and like-minded people who have come together and I just have this feeling like, tune in and take a look. It’s got a great crime element, it’s got a great comedy element that we didn’t realize was in there as much as it is, and that comes from the great character element, and so I just really think that this is going to be a show that everyone enjoys.
